Wondering what you can’t store in a storage unit? This might seem like an easy and straight-forward question, but when you’re in the middle of packing, organising, and de-cluttering it can be a little difficult to figure out. Because as convenient as self-storage is, there are just some items that can’t be stored in them. So, here’s a go-to list of the don’ts, to give you a helping hand as you pack.
Perishable items of any kind can’t be stored in a traditional self-storage unit. Food items like meat, poultry, fish, raw fruits and vegetables attract unwanted bugs and other critters which definitely don’t belong in self-storage. As well as fresh food, avoid storing canned items and preserves – insects and unwanted pests are relentless no matter how secure your food items may be.
Plants need light and love to live – so they don’t survive in storage units. What’s more, plants attract moisture, creating the perfect environment for things like mould and mildew – the true unwanted guests of any long-term storage arrangement.
Although you may think this category is an easy one to identify, there are so many different supplies and chemicals that can slip through the cracks.
Take that spare gas bottle for instance. Gas bottles and flammable materials cannot be stored inside self-storage units.
Coming into winter and realise you don’t need those gardening supplies? Unfortunately, fertiliser and other garden chemicals (weed killer or insecticides) can’t be stored either.
Due to fluxuating temperatures inside storage units, other household chemicals such as petrol, paint thinner, and solvents, also can’t be stored inside traditional units. Flammable items can cause havoc inside storage facilities and it’s easy for household items to be packed up and stored without a second glance. If you’re stuck on what chemicals can and can’t be stored, give us a call.
Moving items in the middle of a downpour? Your items might get damp Not only are damp or wet items more likely to become corroded or damaged overtime, but this moisture rich environment (just like plants) creates a haven for mould and mildew. Make sure all your items are thoroughly dry and prepped to be stored before you shut the door on your unit.
It goes without saying but stolen items are absolutely not allowed at any self-storage facility. The same goes for explosives (this includes fireworks and sparklers!) and firearms. Big no-nos.
If you’re not still not sure, give our friendly team a call– we’re only too happy to help.
