How to Declutter Your Home with Self Storage

You know you need to declutter, but it can seem like a daunting task. But given that we’re spending more and more time at home, there’s never been a better time to finally clean out the garage, re-arrange that room, and give yourself some much needed space. But where to start? We’ve put together a handy list of tips to help you de-clutter, starting with some small, manageable steps.

1. Make a Plan

Just like any big task, before you start the heavy lifting, set yourself up for success and make a plan.

– Decide how much time you have to spend on de-cluttering
– Set an end date and an end goal will also help
– Make a list of the tasks you need to tackle
– Identify where you will move your ‘decluttered’ objects to. Will you sell them, recycle them, send them to the tip? Or will you keep some – and if so, do you need extra space? That’s where self-storage comes in.
– Write down why it’s important to you. Maybe you’re moving house, going through a change of season, or just simply wanting a refresh – but when you lose motivation, reflecting on your ‘why’ can help you stay focused.

2. Start Small

Every hill looks like a mountain until you take the first step. It’s important not to try and tackle the big picture all at once. Instead of starting with the whole house, go room by room, and tackle small jobs to avoid overwhelm. Some key areas you may want to focus on:

– Books – do you need all of your books? Could some of them be put away for safe keeping?
– Collected objects – sure, some of these look fabulous and remind you of a special place or time, but are they starting to take up too much space? You don’t have to throw them out – consider storing them.
– Kitchen appliances and utensils – do you ever use that breadmaker? What about that second set of knives that go unused?
– Kids toys – kids get bored of their toys so easily. Can you donate some, or pass them on to a friend? Don’t forget to keep a few collectables – they’ll never forgive you if you throw out their priceless Star Wars collection!

3. Tackle your seasonal items

Seasonal items are easy things to declutter. That big bulky winter weight doona and that snow gear probably don’t need to be readily accessible in the summertime – especially in Australia. The change of season signals a great time to de-clutter those weather/season-specific items you’re keeping around the house. Christmas decorations, snow gear, or winter warmers, can all be tucked away, safely in storage, for when you really need them. This will free up valuable cupboard space for items you’re going to need and use regularly.

4. Once you start, try not to stop

There’s nothing worse than leaving a job half-finished, especially when it comes to de-cluttering. Stopping halfway often means piles of belongings out of place, or misplaced items getting lost or thrown out in the process. Follow your plan and keep your goal in mind, to get the job done in one go.

5. Book your self-storage

If you’re keeping your decluttered items in self-storage, make sure you book it in in advance. Use a storage calculator to work out how much space you need, and get a quote . Then, if you choose a mobile self-storage solution, just arrange a time for them to bring the module to your door. All you have to do is load it in, and they’ll take it away for you, leaving your house clutter-free. Don’t you feel the relaxation starting?
