How to Store Electronics Devices in a Self-Storage Unit

Electronics play a huge part in our lives, and as the years go by, we’re constantly collecting more and more devices. Whether you’re storing for the short or long-term, there are many steps you can take to make sure your electronic devices are stored correctly. We’ve put together some handy hints and tips to help.

Try and hold on to the original packaging

If you’re planning to store relatively new electronics inside your storage unit, it’s best to keep them in their original packaging. The boxes and other packaging material that came with your TV or computer have been tailor-made to keep that item safe and secure whilst being moved from place to place or store to store, which makes it perfect for keeping things safe whilst in storage.

If this isn’t an option, utilise moving boxes and professional grade packaging, to avoid unnecessary damage or dints to your devices.

Which cord goes with what cord?

When it comes to electronics, there’s nothing worse than a misplaced cord, right when you need it most. When your devices go into storage, it’s important to keep all the related cords (and accessories) together just so you know what’s what. Labels can certainly help, as well as taping your cords to the back of your device, or on the inside of the box it’s stored in, to avoid a mix-up.

What about something bigger, like… Whitegoods?

Fridges – make sure all the shelves are removed before transport, and the inside has been properly cleaned out. Also, be sure store your fridge in an upright position.

Washing machines – you’ll usually need to fasten transport bolts to stop the barrel moving during transport, and drain the water before it goes into storage to stop unnecessary moisture build-up.

Don’t pack anything up too high

If you need to stack items inside your unit, make sure your electronic devices are stored in a stable, non-weightbearing position. A box of books taking a tumble from the top of your tower of belongings isn’t the end of the world, but that brand new TV is a different story.

Remove all batteries

If you’re planning on storing your electronic device for the long-term, make sure to remove the battery where possible. Over time, batteries can leak, causing major damage to not just the device itself, but whatever may be stored in close proximity. Environmental factors can unfortunately accelerate this process (extreme weather or excess moisture), so a climate-controlled unit is always best when it comes to storing battery powered items and other electronic devices.

Dust is not your friend

Over time, dust can easily accumulate in a variety of different (and often hidden) places especially when it comes to electronics. Make sure your items are dust-free before storing them to ensure they have the best chance of performing at their best once you’re ready to use them again.
